The History of Texas Holdem Tournaments

It is quite nice to look back at how these Texas Holdem tournaments started. People should somehow have an idea of the game's humble beginnings up to the peak of its popularity in recent years. One thing is for sure, the road to success was not easy, but somehow the game really strived to reach what it is now today.

The exact beginnings of the Texas Holdem game are somewhat uncertain. However, the state legislature of Texas considers Robstown as the place which have given birth to this exciting game. Some historians believe that the game started in the early 1900s before it was able to reach the city of Las Vegas in Nevada at the latter parts of the 1960s. Among those credited for bringing the game to the public's attention are Doyle Brunson, Amarillo Slim and Crandell Addington.

At first, it was only the Golden Nugget Casino that was offering the game to players. It was not until the 1970 that the game truly received a serious attention after Jack and Benny Binion bought the rights of a gambling convention from Tom Moore. The poker tournaments included in the convention were later called the World Series of Poker. From then on, Texas Holdem was considered a serious card game.

The early poker tournaments were held at Binion's Horseshoe Casino which can be found in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to sources, a journalist named Tom Thackrey recommended that the final event of the different tournaments would be no limit games. After that, the idea seemed to have stuck. Since then, the main events were always no-limit events.

The World Series of Poker has been conducting Texas Holdem poker tournaments as early as the 1970s. In the 1980s, these events have reached the state of California. After that, there seems to be no looking back for the game. It has reached far beyond levels that were unexpected. Today, these tournaments were done worldwide. Even places that were beyond imagined are now playing these games.

Several factors have been determined which may have led to the boom of Texas Holdem tournaments in recent years. These include the launch of online poker, the various television programs and films that depict the game, as well as the championship run of Internet poker qualifier Chris Moneymaker at the World Series of Poker in 2003. Meanwhile, other sources believe that the National Hockey League lockout and other television advertisements for online poker rooms also contributed to the boom of Texas Holdem.
